About Crystal Meth (Methamphetamine)
Methamphetamine is a stimulant. Crystal
Meth is chemically related to medications used to treat conditions
such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), narcolepsy
(frequent, brief and uncontrollable episodes of deep sleep)
and even obesity.
Under controlled manufacturing and prescribing
conditions, methamphetamine compounds have been useful in
helping individuals who suffer with these conditions. However,
as a recreational drug—with no controls over its purity
or dosing—it is highly psychologically addictive.
Meth is a simple-to-manufacture drug that
can be concocted from ingredients you may have laying around
your house. An ounce of meth (with a street price of as much
as $10,000.00) can be produced from less than $200 worth of
raw materials, and that’s enough to get about 100 people
high.
It’s easy to make, easy to get, easy
to use, and it’s one of the most addictive substances
on the planet. It can be smoked, snorted, injected or taken
orally, and each method has a unique profile for stimulation.
Smoking or injecting the drug creates an intense, extremely
pleasurable rush or “flash.” This feeling lasts
only a few minutes.
Snorting provides a euphoric feeling within
three to five minutes, but without the intensity brought on
by injection. Swallowing the drug also creates this euphoric
sensation within fifteen to twenty minutes. One of the reasons
users find the drug so addicting is the fleeting nature of
the “high.” Users find the “tweaking”
experience of increased energy and alertness, the euphoria
and heightened sense of sexuality so desirable that they “chase
the high,” eventually needing more of the drug, more
often, to satisfy the cravings.
